railroad tracks

I am sorry that the person who makes me happiest is not you.

You and I, midnight in the sky above us
Following the railroad tracks
The best thing about walking along railroad tracks is that they always go straight
You and I will never get lost.
Echoes of our voices on the surface of the inky blue pond
Ducks quacking, calling to the night air
You and I framed by the navy water and their tittering voices
Warning, “Don’t get lost!”
But we won’t, because we followed the railroad tracks
You and I will easily find our way back, even in the dark
Ebony kisses in the humid midnight air,
My long hair wrapped in the collar of your polo shirt
You have got to buy some v-necks, something more comfortable
I press myself into your smoky masculinity
Soaking in your quiet strength and solidity
I drink you in with vigor now,
But for you and I nothing is forever.
And although we followed the railroad tracks,
You and I will eventually get lost
In each other, in others, in ourselves.

I am sorry that the person who makes me happiest is not you.
