Favorite Quote:
I was not made with lightness on my tongue to be silenced.

They tell you,
You can’t.
You won’t.
You aren’t.
You’ll never be,
Anything.

But you shoot for the stars.

You are too dumb,
Too weak,
Too emotional,
Disgusting,
Ugly,
Loser,
Nothing,
Your kind does not belong here.

The words they speak,
You know they’re lies,
But they feel like reality.

But, you shoot for the stars.

The words chain you down,
Trapping you in a cell,
Hidden behind the bars of rage.
The hate burrows deeper and deeper,
Into your soul.
Until you feel as if,
You are nothing.

The only way,
To fix your emptiness,
Is to:
Prove.
Them.
Wrong.

So you shoot for the stars.

When did my race,
My color,
My ethnicity,
My religion,
My gender,
My sexuality,
Determine my success?

Black.
White.
Purple.
Blue.
Pink.
Red.
Orange.
They say a rainbow is beautiful,
So why do they only see one color?

Keep shooting for the stars.

You shake the words off,
Like tiny ants clinging to your skin,
soon,
The weight will be lifted.

You turn your head,
Ignore the comments,
You laugh at their ignorance.

You keep reaching for the stars.

You work:
Harder,
Better,
Faster,
Stronger.
Yet, they still are oblivious to your success.

Open up their eyes,
Make them stare in awe at your achievements,
Show all the haters who you truly are.

Shoot for the stars.

Astound them by your knowledge.
Knock them down with your strength.
Make them bow to your confidence.

Tell yourself this;
I am:
Strong,
Powerful,
Brilliant,
Successful,
Beautiful,
Amazing,
Perfect ,
You are equal.

Astound them with your work and persistence.
Climb the ladder of success.
And shoot for the stars.

The author's comments:

In school we had to write a poem, essay, or short story about the movie, Hidden Figures. We submitted them in a district wide contest run by Joe Courtney, Connecticut's state representative. I came in second place in this contest and hope it inspires many others to write about problems with the world and maybe change someones point of view. My goal in this piece was to inspire those to look at a persons personality and worth rather than the labels society assigns them. Hope you enjoy it!
