Alone
The world around me
Was so welcoming.
I traveled from there
To here,
And now I am stuck
On my trip.
I look out the tiny window
To see the scared faces of my children.
They have each other
To hold tight.
I arrived welcomed
And became deceived.
I rally.
I protest.
I was unaware
The shade of my skin
Or the God with whom I spoke
Would be so debilitating.
“The streets are paved with gold,”
They said.
But now
The lady’s flame is extinguished.
Back home I go
To be alone once again.
