Soup and Memories MAG
A sight so familiar
my grandchildren play
beneath the dinner table
and I reminisce
on a pure adolescence
a smell so familiar
flowed through the kitchen
of my grandmother’s warm house
“Te extrañamos”
was echoed by relatives
a sound so familiar
we gave thanks to God
in a tongue that isn’t mine
recited with ease
but I’m focused on eating
a feeling so familiar
whole spoon in my mouth
warm soup dribbling down my chin
How could I forget
a memory like this one?
A taste so familiar
I take the first sip
before we can even pray
I’ll never forget
that familiar feeling
