I am From
I’m from swimming in a pool swallowing me.
Worn and stretched clothing.
Hand-me-downs.
From proving capabilities of my age.
Basketball, baseball, biking.
And slipping on ice catching up with the “big” kids.
I’m from clutter and catastrophe.
Bathroom floors covered in clothes.
Memories consuming the walls.
From Sunday school and worship.
A sparkling cross necklace.
And listening to the hymn of fellowship.
I’m from a family of eight.
broken into two.
And pretending to others we’re perfection.
From perseverance and positivity.
“A glass half full, never empty.”
And Dad quoting, “Show what others can’t see.”
I’m from left brain logic.
Math my art.
And what’s incomprehensible in knowledge.
From moments alone in my room.
Nights.
And cherishing the time watching movies with Mom.
I’m from swimming in a pool swallowing me.
Worn and stretched clothing.
Hand-me-downs.
