Yearn to Learn
They teach me how to summarize,
To paraphrase and symbolize
They teach me of what came before,
Of kings and gods and peace and war
They teach of camels, cats and crabs,
And microscopes which help for labs
They teach me how to calculate,
Of squares and lines, both curved and straight
But oh how all this bores me so,
For what I really yearn to know
Is how to love, to find what’s sweet,
To live a life that’s deemed complete
Teach me to discover passion,
And all the thrill which I’ve imagined
Don’t teach me what’s of your concern,
For this I do not yearn to learn

This poem was inspired by a sense of disconnect between what is taught in high school and what actually interests me. I think I share this feeling with others, hence my decision to publish online.
