How could such a perfect moment,
One that couldn’t possibly go wrong,
Do just that?
In a room once filled with laughter,
A scream echoed on the walls
All because of one clumsy girl

Go back five minutes, and I was running.
Running from my cousins in a game of tag.
Everything was all fun and games until
My feet carried themselves onto our sofa,
The one with a missing pillow and a rip here and there.
Up I went, kicking off any and all things casually thrown on top
And suddenly the floor disappeared beneath me and I felt myself falling down.
Head first, feet second.

I can’t remember much of the aftermath.
No one would tell me what actually happened even if I asked.
All I could remember was blinding white lights and a can of Brisk .

A worried mother and a less than please dad
Drove me home with a bag of toys, stitches in my head,
And a fancy new “headband”
Also known as the thick white bandage wrapped tightly around my head.

Everyone tells you that everything happens for a reason,
I guess this must’ve happened for one too.
Although I could’ve gone without the falling,
The bleeding, and that trip to the hospital,
I finally learned something that many already knew,
Watch where you’re going.
A great lesson brought to you by my memory of an 8-year old
Going through yet another near death experience.

Five years later, here I am.
Enjoying life like any other kid.
But I still think back to that day
Where a mere game resulted in stitches.
I know that one day I’m going to be on my own.
So I’ve got to start watching over myself even if that begins with the simple,
Watch where you step.
