Seven Ways to Look at a Lighter This work has been published in the Teen Ink monthly print magazine.

I
Among twenty boxes of matches,
the lighter is chosen.

II
A candle and a wick aren’t much.
A candle, a wick, and a lighter
are the smell of sweet cinnamon in the air.

III
The candles are burning.
The lighters must be flaming.

IV
If the cave man had a lighter,
would he have frozen to death?

V
The prince searched for his bride.
He finds her in the depths of the castle with
a lighter flaming in her hands.

VI
The lighter flickers in the wind.
It is a small part of the pantomime.

VII
I am of three minds;
like a candle,
in which three wicks
the lighter has lit.
