There was this girl
She believed in happiness
In love
In hope.
In the back of her room
There hung a framed picture
It depicted a prestige summer meadow
Flowers in full bloom sprung up from the green grass
And the sky was the perfect shade of blue.

She dreamed of living in this meadow
She escaped into the corners of her mind and
Imagined what life could be in her little sanctuary
Everything was perfect then
She lived without worry
Without care.

When she turned thirteen
Her brother
Her best friend
Disappeared from her world
She turned to the canvas
And dreamed of how life would be
If he was still there
She sat and stared
Questioning why God would take something so special
Away from her

When she turned fourteen
Her pain became deeper
She took a razor to her skin
And tried to slice away the sorrow
That consumed her
She saw the landscape and imagined a perfect world
With no pain
No loss
No sorrow

When she turned fifteen
She couldn't bare the pain anymore
She looked at the picture
And saw an unattainable happiness
An unrealistic wonderland
Nothing but a silly fairytale
She tore the picture down
And cursed herself
For ever believing in happiness

When she turned sixteen
Her world was black
She saw no hope
No light
No chance of happiness
She felt alone
She felt unwanted
She felt abandoned

Four months after she turned seventeen
She fell for this boy
Whose eyes were as blue
As the sky in her dreams
Whose smile made her
Remember what happiness felt like
And
What she once believed in

When he took her into his arms
She imagined the landscape from all those years ago
And said to herself
“This is my sanctuary,
My wonderland,
My fairytale,
Here I feel wanted,
Here I feel loved,
Here I feel no pain.
He is
My unattainable happiness,
My light,
My love,
My perfect world."
