A Caged Canary
A caged canary,
screaming in agony,
longing to trample this fortress
dividing my heart from yours,
to shelter you beneath my wing
Allow me to nurture your pain,
swallow your burdens and demons
though my song is sung softly,
I whistle a vigorous tune
One day, my dear, I’ll take to the sky
we’ll find home within the horizon
no, I’ll never wander
I’ll bask in your sunlight
forever.

This poem is about two young lovers, who can't always be with each other because they're still on the verge of adulthood. When one is suffering and experiencing turmoil, the other can't always be there for comfort. It's a feeling of being trapped in a cage, a form of guilt multiplied and stretched, when you can't be there for the one you love the most. The last stanza is a promise of hope. Once the two can be together, the narrator promises that they'll never have to part again.
