I fell in love with someone in the park                      
they were sitting on the bench in front of mine
legs crossed on the ground and face pressed
up to the sky
their eyes were closed and I wondered if
they were sleeping
I thought they might even be dead
but then they would take a deep breath and
twitch their lips
I wondered what made them smile
I wondered what made them laugh
what made them cry
I imagined me walking up to them
saying something witty or clever
they would laugh and I would laugh
and then I would ask to see you again
maybe we would get coffee
or go to the movies
and we would walk home under city lights
being lifted above the ground by the waves
of summer
then maybe we would kiss
delicate and warm
and when I was asleep that night
I would wish you were in my arms
breath tickling the skin covering my
quivering bones
you would then wake up with gold
lighting your face from the window
which brought in June air through its glass
glass that might shatter from all the light
and I would cover your body with my own
however I might not get hurt
because I haven’t moved
but you have
you’ve left
an empty bench
for my eyes to stare at
you left me here alone
why would you do that
