Stargazing

I can't go stargazing with you tonight
Because I don't want to think about which stars have died yet,
Realize that dreams that we're longing for, waiting for
Are already gone, we're just too blind to see
That it's hopeless.
I don't want to hope for something false.
Because you and I could never fit together
The stars shine much brighter for you
You see so much more in them than I do
So choose the one who sees as much as you.
And though I once dreamed on shooting stars of you
My dreams for you are now tumbling to the ground,
Shooting like dead stars that I used to dream on
Fated to fall like we're fated to fail
At this curious game called love.
I don't want to deceive you
Sitting beside you looking at stars
And not seeing any but those in your eyes
I'm not right for you.
So I guess it's my fault we're not star-crossed lovers
The fault is not in your stars, but in mine
We're just not meant to be.
So please don't expect me to watch us fall twice,
To watch our stars tumbling, hitting the ground
I used to find thrill in falling
Until I realized just how much it hurt
When you're lying alone on the ground.
I don't want to hurt you
So choose the girl who is right for you
Choose the girl who will look at the stars with you,
Dream with you, grow with you
Choose her
Not me.
Choose her so I won't have to watch you fall
I don't want to hurt you
I don't want your stars to stop shining.
Choose her so that I can rest assured
That I've done the right thing
By letting you go,
Choose her before my resolve breaks.
Choose her before I admit that I'm lying
That if you would ask me to stargaze tonight
I'd say yes, of course.
Because ideals crumble in the face of simple pleasures
And I'm not selfless enough
To do what is right
And give up the prospect
Of wishing on shooting stars with you.
