the day breeds phantoms that travel the sky
in a mangled bone-white fleece, hauling
shadows along the grass like
little gray wheelbarrows. vagabonds
with solemn, shapeless faces, so
weathered with dents and holes that they
bleed like ruptured veins, dripping onto
the starving green below
