"You've got to be original, because if you're exactly like someone else, what do they need you for?"

I am the eternal shadow
Who scurries, flees, through the endless flood of blinding light
Never resting, never stopping, never giving up my search
For you

You are the invincible sunbeam
Lost in the darkness of the cave, swallowed whole by crushing black
Never moping, never crying, never ceasing your search
For me

Time passes, and we no longer fear
I float, eerily, through the soft light
You waft, gently, through the inky black
But we are not yet finished

I have searched so thoroughly, so insistently, as have you
You have come so far, wondered for so long, as have I
And now we meet at the edge, where the light meets the darkness
And your glow meets my presence… and we are complete

The author's comments:
This piece, "Dark Lights", was inspired by love- more specifically, the love between a person and their one absolute completion, who I call their "Other". The connection between two Others, as I see it, is the inevitable attraction between two opposites, such as the pull that guides a positive magnet to a negative one. I wrote this poem for my Other, to show him that I am here with him.
