Surface
They scream at me
they're in my head.
I hear them down through the soles of my feet
and up out of my ears.
They wrap my neck up
into an unwanted noose
an untimely death.
I grab for something
a rope
a hand
to pull me back up onto
the surface
a gasp entails
a whisper from above
“safety”
but to me this safety is false
unwelcoming
unwanted
because what if the only safety
is within our minds
while our mind is the only enemy.
