The End of the World

I’m absorbed, all sucked in,
reality is put on a spin,
Earthquakes you say?
I feel nothing!
Then the phone rang, “Ring, ring, ring!”
“Son!” Mom yells. “Leave the house!”
But to me, she’s silent as a mouse.

Suddenly, I rumble, tumble,
My eyes are fixed, so I give a grumble
I roll my eyes and wave it off,
Inhale debris and give a cough,
“This earth is such a drama queen,
her tantrums will soon break my spleen!”

My fingers fly at speeds of lightning,
My concentration almost frightening,
I press send and smile in glee,
My friend just replied to me!

I look up, the world is ending!
At the same time I was sending,
And I noticed nothing...

Because I was on facebook.

This piece reflects my view of the average teen's inherent obsession with social networking. It turns into more than a nifty tool--first a hobby, eventually a way of life. This issue causes more problems than can be tracked in today's world. As a result, I decided to write a poem showing how absorbed some people can be with social networking, to the extent where they lack the awareness of the world around them.

Hilarious, I love the ending. Totally accurate!
