from you to try and get some rest,

heard your house clink, settle
like bottles under the table
your hair chopped short rustled with the
leaves outside
and i couldn't close my eyes
your breathing small and long and steady
i could hear you still
from the chair across the room
because you fell asleep too soon
so i held your hand
and loved you
from the chair across the room.

i ended up
in your girlfriend's house across the river
from you, it was late at night
speaking in slurred lines and
forming secret ties
a shared kind of wildness deep in our dizzy minds
excited and i am reminded
forcefully
of the morning i conquered the world.
meanwhile i watch her
from the chair across the room
and in this grey and blue
i feel that i know you
more than you can know.
