Blank Eyes

Your eyes
blank as screens
stare at me and
I am frozen.
My brain’s trying
to make thoughts
connect: they throw rope
in the circus of my mind.
If I could summon words
to remedy that stare
I wouldn’t need
to quote you poetry like you ain't ever seen
and offer that as explanation:
if only then the beating
will be soothed
within my chest
and I might
breathe again.
