If today is gonna be my last day,
I'm gonna go dancing in my last thunderstorm
(Even if there's three seconds between
boom and flash)
Barefoot and in my whitest Sunday Best
I'm gonna bathe in the unsalted tears of
the people
And scream out like a woman in labor
Onion peals of happiness
(But oh so many layers)
Arms stretched out; I'm gonna try to embrace the sky
I will be thrown back by its growls
And plunge, headlong into the mud and stone and clay
‘Cause when it's your last day, you don't worry about grass stains.

If today is gonna be my last day,
Then I'm gonna press my last kiss to the soaked crown of her head
So hard that my lip is gonna split open under the pressure of my top teeth
My tongue is gonna probe the wound and find it bleeding
Then, I will smile my last smile
And spin her around so that I can hear the pelting raindrops against her nearly bare legs
That are growing so fast, everyday, so fast
(‘Cause she's my sister, you perv)
And if today is gonna be my last, I want this to be her last memory of me,
Holding her in the rain, even if there were
Two seconds between boom and flash.

If today is gonna be my last day,
I'm gonna drink my last mug of tea under the wringed-out night sky
Sitting in the bed of a too-new to-be-sentimental pick-up truck
Taking time to grieve the stars
And have as many dreams as I like before I drift off into slumber
Even if there is half a second between boom and flash
And the lightning singes my eyebrows
As it strikes the ground in front of me

This was a beautiful poem. Your voice shone through effortlessly, and I hung on the edge of every word:)
