I see this poem
plastered on the Internet,
a blatant “HELP! I lost my dog-
Please call 555-542-3981” appeal
for attention.

And I am jealous.

I cannot make my words rhyme
or employ
the vulgar vernacular
bleeding
from those lines.

So I sit and seethe,
green and
hypocritical

because what more does a poet want
than to be
envied?

The author's comments:
Coming across a poem that an acquaintance had posted, I was struck by the number of compliments the poet had received. I channeled my reaction into my own writing and this rather green little poem was the product. Jealousy, though an ugly emotion, is all too common, and I hope this poem captures the daily flashes of envy we all experience.
