The more control you have over yourself, the less control others have over you.

I heard you laugh and cry,
we'd been waiting for such a long time.
You thank God and I know why.

I hear you scream and plead,
'You should have taken me!'
You ask God what we did to deserve this.

Call your parents then call mine,
over the line I hear their laughter,
you and I are going to have a happy ever after.

One month in and we had picked some names,
you feel like you are to blame.
You shake your head and question if life is a game.

The green plus mark brought a whole new spark...
our lives were going to be free of dark
due to our new pending little piece of art.

Call your parents then call mine,
no one should ever have to hear this line.
I hear their cries and all of their I wonder whys.

October couldn't come any sooner,
all the 'Congratulations!' and 'When's the shower?'
I was on top of the world, engulfed with power.

People send their condolences,
but nothing can save us from this.
You're the one thing mommy and daddy will always miss.

This is not a true story for me, but for other people in the world it is. %15-%20 of pregnancies end in a miscarriage. This is told by a soon-to-be father, as he finds out he is having a child and after the miscarriage. (Every other stanza.)

Ohhhh this just about broke my heart. Wow. This is powerfully sad and I feel like I'm going to cry, but it's okay because this is beautiful writing and it deserves a few shed tears. Excellent job! *sniffles*

This was a beautiful poem and the alternating between before and after the miscarriage had its impact! The line in which you called the fetus the little pending piece of art was beautiful. And the last line, though simple is very deep and moving. It reminded me of this Japanese movie 'Koizora' (my all time fav). They lose their baby cuz of the guy's ex girlfriend. Then they have a plotless funeral for their unborn baby in the park flower place. Kind of the poem they could have written to their child. It's was a very sad but beautiful piece. P.s. please watch koizora. I cried buckets.

Why? Why? Why?! Lexus, this is your poetic opus. This makes me wanna weep. Oh the agony and the emotion of helplessness. Best part is that you chose it to be the father's perspective rather than the mother's; best part there. I felt his pain and sorrow from start to finish. You will not disappoint me ever, Lexus. I hope you continue to be the talented poet you are. Cuz honestly this is your best so far. I can't wait to your further work, which I know will continue to be just as good if not better...I'm thinking the latter, cuz you're too good to remain just being good.

(tears) that was so beautiful! It's so balanced the way you told this poem, the fathers happiness and sadness in each pair of stanzas complement each other. I love the way all the lines stitch together in perfect harmony. It's just perfect! great job!!!! (Ever thought about putting these poems in a book????) you totally should

This is amazing! I believe that this is one of the saddest things that I have ever read. You are one of the most amzing writers that I have ever read, and you are most certainly my favorite writer on Teen Ink.
