home plate
a funny sense of normalcy
resides in the eroding, extending dock
like it’s been waiting for my
pen and journal for the entirety of its existence
it’s seen the smiles and terror
of my ancestors who’ve
shared my
last initial and zip code
it whispers, “i’ll listen, you’re already forgiven for
being gone for so long.”
i proceed to carve
my initials and the date
into what’ll now be referred to as
home plate
