I love you like this because I do not know any other way to love - Pablo Neruda, Sonnet 17

Under tattered newspaper she lies,
A product of her
Mother’s drug destruction
And her father’s drunken gambling.
No blanket or shelter
All sold for crack
She is all that’s left to sell
For her father’s gambling debts.
She is only 12
But 80 as well.
Too much hunger, poverty,
Cold and abuse
She has seen
In her short span of life.
Does she dream?
Or is she resigned to
Being prostituted for
Drugs, drink, and games?
Her and her mother
Submit to her father
Will she submit to
The call of cocaine?
Or will she rise above
Her tattered newspaper?
