I love you like this because I do not know any other way to love - Pablo Neruda, Sonnet 17

The pain of my heart
Ebbs and flows.
The hurt is a smattering,
Until its full force shows.
I’m fine until
Memories pour in.
I can live until
My heart explodes within.
And it takes away my breath
And spears me
Novocain couldn’t help
Nothing can,
My heart it yelps.
The pain is there on my shoulder
Always watching
And looking over.
And then,
It strikes.
And shoots.
To kill it aims,
And it always, always
Maims.
And the hurt
The hurt
My heart breaking
Makes a silent noise
A whisper of pain
Eating my joy.
The silence resounds
In my brain,
And I can’t hear anything
Over the pain.
Anger joins
The twisted party
Each jockeying to take over
Each wanting to destroy me.
But I can deal
Until the whisper of hurt
Speaks to me again

"This is one of the many poems I wrote after my first boyfriend broke up with me, and it really sums up how i felt that first week"
