I stand up
And venture forward
To the front of class
Today we have to
Tell the class
“What we want to be
When we grow up?”
I look at my paper
With the only words
Written on it were:
“Luis Matos”
The teacher tells
Me to begin
What do I want to
Be when I grow up?
Well I want
To be myself
Unlike every
Other kid who wants
To be a superhero
Or a policeman
Or even a teacher
I’ll like to stay myself
Till and even adulthood
Unlike all those kids
Who will lose themselves
In their own
Fictitious dreams
I will continue on to
Wanting to being myself
And only myself
Because in my own eyes
I am smarter
Than a teacher
And have more courage
Than any superhero
Or policeman
Funnier than
Any comedian
Flow better than
Any poet
More galactic
Or more universal
Than any astronomer
So why not want
To be myself?
I looked at
Many stunned faces
Looking at me
I return to
Seat and continue
To color outside the lines
