You Promised
Every father promises to protect his little girl,
So where did that go?
You used to be so good at it,
You never let me down.
At least that’s what I thought,
When I was a little girl,
And everything was sunshine and rainbows,
And daddy was the my favorite person.
Every day after school I would wait up late,
Way past bed time even though mom yelled,
Because I wanted to see you.
Even those few minutes as my eyes were drooping,
They meant the world to me.
Because to a little girl, daddy’s perfect.
But as she gets older, she starts to see things.
Mommy and daddy yell all the time,
But she believes them when they say its normal,
And not to worry, because they love her,
And each other,
And it’ll all be just fine, just give it some time.
Time goes on, fighting gets worse.
Daddy calls mommy things that make her cry,
Bruises appear from “kitchen accidents,”
But she believes it,
Because no little girl wants to think daddy broke his promise.
Then little girls grow up.
