Just Coexist

I thought we were friends
Journalism nerds who ate lunch together
We played those silly cross-word games
And I took them very seriously
And you always seemed impressed

Then she started showing up
You were in drama with her
You had to kiss her in the play
But my fear was that maybe… you meant it

Now she comes up at lunch
Suggests words that aren’t even real, just to hear her own voice
And you say, “Good try, though,”
When you used to say to me, “Wow, good job!”
She even came in wearing your letterman jacket
She said, “You forgot this!”
And you said “Hey, thanks, Laura!”

I thought we were friends
Maybe we still are,
But I guess we’re not very close
If she’s turning your head
Maybe you’re just too nice
Although your compliments to me were always timed
And your compliments to her are spontaneous

We still play those crossword games at lunch
We still work on the paper
We still say each other’s names
But where once we were friends
We now just coexist
