Close your eyes for just a moment
Amazing what you can see when you’re not looking;
Electric red lines, pulsing with power
Slitting the utter darkness at random
Then glaciers of ice drift aimlessly across the black Arctic
Blinding pockets of chilled light
An original Jason Pollock, black and blue and red and white
Splattered under the shade of your lids
Shapes emerge, slowly and timidly

A falcon, wings bent, racing upwards
Eyes, butterflies, Queen Elizabeth on a coin
Elephant Man entertaining a crowd
Two white figures bending towards each other on a balcony
And then, if you’re patient enough,
A flag at half mast, feet shuffling on and on…
Tears sliding down your black canvas, the wavelengths of a scream,
The red glare of a television screen
Red and gold helmets swathed in darkness, Mountains of ash, gods burning,
Skyscrapers standing, Planes shaking in their aerial suspension,
Your husband’s lovely face
Okay, you’re done
But now, it’s too late
You’re mind’s artist has left your eyelids ingrained with memories
