Swimming in a sea of leaves
I can't imagine a more profound scene
like a battlefield that bleeds.

We sweep, we blow
They fall, they are carried
on and on like a river's flow

We pile, we jump
and again they are dumped
like a wave crashing and then receeding.

Mounted into a pyre
I light a match and set fire
releasing the magic of the summer.

I listen as it cracks and crinkles
and watch as it breathes smoke
growing higher and higher a message to the gods.
Again I poke.

Next year it will be the same
For life never stops dying.
