River Spirit
It was a clear day;
Birds chirped in the tall trees,
warning others of the incoming
chill.
The trees were auburn and golden
and brown
and the river I sat next to
was cold and fast.
I threw a pebble into the river,
watching as it was swallowed by
the waves.
Today is the anniversary that my
baby sister was lost in this
river
In the same fashion as the pebble.
I was supposed to be watching her,
but her little blond head blended
in with the autumn leaves
and she had been a very clever
little girl.
I was preoccupied with outdoor
chores.
I barely noticed the little splash
behind me.
And she was gone.
I now throw petals from her
favorite flowers into the
river
And her favorite foods and snacks
In hopes that she'd someday get
them.
