She and He
She was heading to nowhere
He was on his way to death
They both thought they were going home,
But sometimes people make mistakes.
They were on the same subway car, that night
Sitting across from each other.
Their knees collided, and they looked up
Seeing into the blank, dead eyes of people who have given up hope.
They looked away.
And the subway stopped.
They both got off,
And headed their separate ways.
But she couldn’t bring herself to get on the bus,
That would take her away,
And he couldn’t make himself pull the trigger,
That would take him away.
They were both back on the subway,
That morning.
In the same car,
And sitting across from each other.
They both thought they were going home,
But this time, they were right.
Their knees collided, and they looked up
Seeing eyes that were no longer dead, but
Vibrant with hope.
And this time, they spoke.
