The best thing about falling in love is when you can't go to sleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.

I hear footsteps at the door
They have come for us once more
Terrified, my heart speeds its beat
As I wonder if I'll have to meet
This destructor of life
Deliverer of strife
Enslaver and master
My heart beats faster
I shield my brother from sight
Mama drops the cover, blocking the light
The door is broken; boots step in
I cover my ears to block out the din
When they leave, a fuss they are making
Mama her strong bravery is faking
Finally they ride off into the night
We crawl out, relieved at the light
Another day we have to live
A bit of hope we have to give.

I wrote this during my U.S. History class when we learned about the slaves. I was astonished at the lengths they would go to to protect each other and the fact that many seemed to keep an optimistic outlook towards the future.
