Slave Story

Laboring in the fields
The angry sun upon my back;
As sweat and blood trickles down
The whack of the hatchet
White cotton picked by black hands
The scream of the tortured;
My life is but desolation,
Waiting to be fully ripped and torn apart
The sorrow and emptiness in the eyes of the mothers
Whose children have been taken in iniquity
To have their lives stolen;
Used to fulfill someone else’s greed;
And the hungry, evil glimmer
In the eyes of their seekers
Whose chilly hands grasp their throats
And force them into the dark pit of suffering
Where they forever lie in fear;
Avoiding the icy hearts of the ones who will destroy them—
Yet never giving back
One day I’ll spread my wings
Soar through the sky
And look down on the clouds
I’ll swoop down
And give the others
A ride to freedom
Where they belong
And I’ll keep coming back
Until each one is safe;
Safe in the warmth of freedom
Where the Worthy One will watch us forever
