Do You See Me?
Oh look at me!
I’m so pretty!
I’m so confident!
I have a good self esteem!
I am a perfect teenager!
Oh, but, look at me.
Look behind the black eyeliner,
Look behind the long eyelashes,
Look behind the bright eye shadow and popping glitter.
Who do you see?
Do you see the girl the teachers and the outsiders see?
Or do you see me,
For me?
Do you see the girl who has no problems?
Who is the ideal teenager?
Do you see the girl with lots of friends
Who love her?
Or do you see me,
For me.
Do you see me for me?
Do you see the girl with depression issues?
Do you see the girl who fights not to puke up her lunch to maybe, just maybe, lose a few pounds?
Do you see the girl with the lightly covered up scars on her arms?
Do you see the constant pain in her eyes?
Or do you see ‘me’?
When you look behind the makeup,
The façade,
I hope you see the ‘me’.
I hope you see the ‘me’.
I don’t know if you could handle me.
And if you can’t handle me,
Who can?
So can you answer the question?
Who do you see?
Me
Or
Me.
