“I write only because
There is a voice within me
That will not be still.”
-Sylvia Plath

The spotlight was so vivid and bright it’s all I can remember.
I hear clips playing of applause from people
Like the end of an old film,
And I hear my name shooting out of people’s round mouths like arrows,
Aiming straight for me, the target.

Someone came up to me afterwards
And said she liked it better than the original.
Then another one said the extra lights were orange.
Were they supposed to be?

My dress was silky
But the lace was jagged
And the calloused skin on my fingers caught up against it.

My breathing was uneven when I finished
And I almost felt as if
Nothing ever came out of my mouth.
Maybe,
I just mouthed it all,
I thought.

I didn’t remember anything else though.
I heard it.
I felt it.
But,
The spotlight was so vivid and bright,
It’s all I can remember
