"We held our peace until it burnt holes in our pockets"

aceful breeze on our last night together

and bottle it up for the next time it's hard to breathe

or you're feeling alone under the night sky.

For years, you wished that I'd be content

falling asleep in your bed alone

And I wanted you to take notice to the monsters

that waited for your most vulnerable time

They watched you eat, cry and sleep

Under that brown cabinet full of secrets

lies and infidelities.

I've never forgotten the way they'd haunt me in dreams;

But for you I was fine with it, and only some days did your soft arms burn my skin:

Friendly affection unfit to match such unrequited love

That smile was lifeless on the night I became tired

Of falling asleep with the lights on

You married yourself to Earth and chained your body to

the red morning sky, and you seemed happy then

but you never told me about the storms that

sunk your ship, or the glass wedged between your toes when you swam

to safety;

Now I dig through photographs and blankets, stored in the trunk we used to share

To remember a time when I felt those quiet hands without an IV in them

You wish I could remember the bird without its cage

And I only wanted you to become marionettes for those monsters

With me;
