Apple Seed Star

she used to cut the apple sideways
so you can see the star of seeds
it would hide
buried treasure
until her knife revealed it
most people cut the wrong way
lengthwise
splicing it apart
so no one will ever find it
and most people don't even know about the hidden star
and the ones who do
say that they're too old to care about apple-seed stars
anymore
I miss her
and her knife
and how she would always give me first pick of the slices
and how no matter how old she got
she always found the star
