Just Like Icarus

I’m stuck here on the edge,
looking out at sea and sky.
What is going up,
and what is going down,
leave me feeling stranded.

The heavens above I long for,
a freedom, peace, and future,
I want so much to find.
But there is so much risk,
to reach such a great reward.

Thundering ocean depths,
are all I have ever known.
I don’t want to go back,
don’t want to be left behind.
How will these wax wings carry me?

Fragile and soft,
they weigh me down.
Should I reach up,
and try to fly?
Only for what could be?

But I don’t want to soar,
to merely taste the sky.
To fall back down to sea,
where I know I’ll drown.
Just like Icarus.

This poem was inspired by a song my friend wrote and the Greek myth of the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus escaping from the Labyrinth.
