Witness
As I sit here, he is in plain view.
He sits with his team,
Casually teasing, laughing, talking,
It seems so natural.
And to them, he is a friend.
If it weren’t for her, I would never suspect
Anything had changed –
That anything was different, unnatural.
She sits near me and watches him.
The bright blue sky above us mocks
The painful remembrance that shivers in her eyes,
Because to her, he is only a memory.
And though I can see it, I can’t understand
All that her eyes see.
Though I have witnessed the change –
The tickling smiles and joy that sparkled in her eyes,
And now, the sparkling tears that scar a face –
I can only watch.
In my eyes, he is a stranger.
