School Days
Rubber soled shoes made odd time with
Big bag’s clicks over sidewalk cracks
Wheels dance in one direction
Pulled forward over every obstacle
To the room where they make us remember
Which fake number/letter goes in which equation
Reasoning out the world until it’s binary.
School days
Answer their questions with what they want to hear
Or else your face burns with shame
And your palms sweat tiny lakes.
With correct responses come glory and respect
Glow among your peers as the best regurgitator.
School days
If you crumble then you’ll fit into that box they gave you on day one
What you’ll lose shall be forgotten in light of what you’ll get.
Thou shalt love these days of schooling
Thou shalt refer to them as “the best days of your life”
While I just call them school days.
