to keep the sick black heat from streaming
Trails leading to the bank of masks were winding
In the blinding dark, still they'll find a way.
"Please stay, please stay," I screamed
As you beamed at my dirty hands.
Commands, commands, but I was working hard for you.
Subdued, I finally showed my face, this is what we are-
Stars and sidewalks and lights and bruised knuckles
Buckles and dirt and faces with lines
Mines and diamonds and coal, we're cold
I was told you'd keep me warm, but I'm freezing
Wheezing, you take the air out of me
I see now, and it's time for the funeral of the covers
Lovers choose what they fell in love with
The wit and the humor, or the mask in its beauty.
I'd love your ugly countenance, if that is what you own.
Now we've shown our faces to one another.
I should have kept my mask on.
