It wasn't her fault, says the road that's hidden underneath the passing traffic.
She didn't even see it coming, explains her crooked glasses from the dresser in her mother's room.
There was no time, whispered the worn tires and exhausted brakes in unison with one another.
It wasn't supposed to happen like this, says the empty bottles that laying smashed in the man's car.

She had a future, says the unread college acceptance letter laying on the kitchen table.
Yes, a future, agrees the sparkling ring that hides untouched in her boyfriend's pocket.
It wasn't supposed to happen like this, says the blue graduation gown hanging in the girl's closet.

It was dark, explains the night draped across the starless sky.
How was she to know? Asked the caution tape that circled the scene, now rolled loosely in the trash.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this", says the newly sober breath of the familiar stranger.
It wasn't supposed to happen like this.
