Tree

The tree was timeless, unchanging
Gnarled roots twisted through my yard
Branches like sails of a ship cast every corner in shadow
Climbing, reaching, imagining, I grew with the tree
My childhood written in its trunk
One day it was gone, chewed up into millions of tiny fragments, gone forever, mauled by a cold machine
That growled and hissed and slowly moved back to its lair, taking with it
my youth
