Double Overtime

Flashes of orange and black
from the opposing team’s jerseys.
The smell of sweat rolling off my body.
I square up to shoot
and get a mouthful of elbow
while my shot is blocked.
I dribble and crossover,
pass the ball and cut to get open again.
I am in constant movement,
on the court.
Double overtime and we are still tied.
I look at the clock 13 . . . 12 . . . 11 . . .
The ball is shot
and swish!

The author's comments:
This piece is based on a basketball game that I experienced last year and in the end we won after a hard game.
