I know why the caged bird sings
As it watches its dreams take wing
And leave it alone for the jewel scattered sky,
Leaving the bird alone, unable to die.
I know why the caged bird pecks,
Against the bars of the cage where he’s kept
By the very master of this little bird,
Whose cries go unnoticed, untouched, unheard.
I know how the caged bird feels,
Receiving through iron bars his meals.
Waiting and longing each hour, each day,
For the hour when he may fly away.
I know why the caged bird sings,
As he watches his dreams take wing.

My many thanks to Maya Angelou who has inspired me to become a phenomenal woman-just like her.
