The pristine tall buttes glistened at the moment when the upper limb of the sun faded behind the horizon.

The orange hue produced from the disappearing sun glistens on the water

while the weeping willow sways with a light summer breeze,

the air cools, the water settles

All seams calm

For just a moment and not a second more

You’re alone

The weight is lifted off your shoulders

And as the last glimpse of light slips away behind the mountain everything is still

Later you hear the snap, crackle, and pop of the wood splitting along a crevice and releasing steam into the fire.

Minuscule lights coming out of the grass, fireflies being caught in jars only to be released back where they came

Children disrupting the silence running and chasing each other

The gooey white fluff stuck in your hair

From the sticky sweet treats that were consumed only minutes earlier

The children stop running and retire to their tents

No one sits around the fire anymore

There is no noise other than the burning embers left from the blazing fire

And the crickets that are hidden in the grass

As you close your eyes the world fades and the darkness consumes you
