The Shadow of My Heart
The memory of you--
Of us--
Is like a shadow
Behind my heart,
Waiting to drag
Me away from
Happiness.
Because
One moment I’m
Smiling and
Laughing,
And the next that
Shadow has wrapped
Itself around my heart,
Bringing with it
All the hurtful
Words that dripped
From your tongue
Like snake venom.

I wrote this poem months after my best friend and I had a bad falling out. I tried to suppress the emotions that wrought me right after to try and stay focused on school. Eventually, I couldn't keep those emotions bottled up any longer, and became so consumed by those emotions that I lost interest in the things I loved and lost motivation in a lot of my daily tasks. I wrote this poem as a way to process and move on from those feelings.
