"It's like waiting for a storm."
"She cried, her eyes tired from her tears, but she was reminded of what she had to do."

The candle sits on top

illuminating sweet roses made of frosting

words that lost meaning,

glitter in the light of the flame

Guests sit in anticipation

The flame flickers

in shyness

And anxiousness

In awaiting her final birthday wish

When the flame is blown out,

An end to a day

that began her life

A nightmare started

Wrapped in a nice little bow

For its unwilling recipient

Forced and pushed toward her

Until, at a loss of will and power

She is forced to accept

The cake is approaching

Voices are clearing,

The atmosphere grows heavy,

With the smells of intoxicating frosting

And melting beeswax

Lips begin to open

The makeshift choir begins to sing,

“Happy birthday to you”

The cake is near approaching

Everyone sits and stares

Eyes shining in the light of the candle,

Murderous for a taste

Heads turn in following,

The path of traveling light

Slow and approaching,

Closer,

And closer,

“Happy Birthday to you”

The cake has finally approached

The choir stops.

She stares, unsure,

Back to the wall

she is forced to make a wish

She closes her eyes

With quivering lips

She whispers her day’s final wish

“I wish this day was over.”

She blows out the candle

And darkness fills the room

The sounds of applause enter her ears

and the cake is cut.

The author's comments:

I wanted to put my own spin on the concept of birthdays, ever since I was young I kind of hated my birthday, especially when it came to the cake. When the lights went off and the room was filled with darkness the candles on the cake seemed creepy to me because though they were a light in the darkness their light illuminated the faces of the guests. It felt like I was in some sort of ritual in a horror movie.
