Poached Eggs
She was sitting at a little table in Chelsea Market
Eating avocado toast and poached eggs
Already on her fourth cup of coffee of the day
She had fallen in love with poached eggs in that restaurant
Poached eggs and maybe the city as well
It had been so easy to get lost in it all
To get lost in the incomparable
Broadway theaters in the morning, lights dark
People pushing past each other in Times Square at night
Diners and cafes and coffee on every corner
Sitting on the steps of the Met
She could only hope
Sitting there surrounded by tourists
And boutiques
And city life
That this would someday be her everyday
That was too much of a dream, her everyday
But there was power in the city
And her everyday, that dream of hers, seemed a little bit closer
Because when she was in the city
She could take on Times Square and she could take on the world
Her everyday would be just like that
Her against the world
All because of the city she loved
And maybe some poached eggs, too
