She tucks her body into a ball
Her chin on the tip of her tail
Lying in the morning sun
Her eyes look tired and pale

Her twitching ears listen to laughter
With golden eyes that will never close
And as the strangers walk inside,
She hardly strikes a pose

The author's comments:
I live near an animal shelter, and the first time I went in there, I saw a black kitten that was so small. She was in the sick ward and didn't even look up as I petted her fur. I felt so sad afterwards. She died the next day before I could get in to adopt her.
